PURPOSE OF THE EXAMINATION
The English Language examination aims to evaluate candidates’ proficiency based on the Learning Outcomes outlined in the English Language Teaching and Learning Syllabus 2020 (Primary). These Learning Outcomes guide the assessment objectives described below.
ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES
Candidates will be assessed on the following abilities:
Paper 1 – Writing
AO1: Write effectively for a given purpose, audience, and context using accurate vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
AO2: Generate relevant ideas and organise them clearly and coherently.
Paper 2 – Language Use and Comprehension
AO1: Demonstrate understanding of a range of written and multimodal texts at literal, inferential, and evaluative levels.
AO2: Apply appropriate vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, and spelling in context.
Paper 3 – Listening Comprehension
AO1: Show understanding of spoken texts at literal, inferential, and evaluative levels, including identifying main ideas and supporting details.
Paper 4 – Oral Communication
AO1: Read aloud fluently and expressively with clear and accurate pronunciation appropriate to the situation.
AO2: Communicate personal opinions, ideas, and experiences clearly to engage listeners.
AO3: Speak confidently and fluently using correct grammar and a suitable range of vocabulary.
EXAMINATION FORMAT
Candidates will be assessed through the following papers:
Paper 1 – Writing (25%)
Duration: 1 hour 10 minutes
Situational Writing: 1 task (14 marks)
Continuous Writing: 1 task (36 marks)
Paper 2 – Language Use and Comprehension (45%)
Duration: 1 hour 50 minutes

Includes 25 MCQs and 50 open-ended questions, assessing both language use and comprehension skills.
Paper 3 – Listening Comprehension (10%)
Duration: Approximately 35 minutes
20 multiple-choice questions based on spoken texts such as narratives, instructions, explanations, arguments, and persuasive texts
The first seven questions use graphic representations
Each audio text is played twice, with reading time given before listening
Paper 4 – Oral Communication (20%)
Duration: About 10 minutes
(5 minutes preparation, 5 minutes examination)
Reading Aloud: Reading one passage clearly and expressively (15 marks)
Stimulus-based Conversation: Discussion based on a photo stimulus (25 marks)
